Causes of Lower Back and Groin Pain: The Iliolumbar Ligament


The iliolumbar ligament joins the fifth lumbar vertebra within the crest of the ilium, or hip, in the lower spine. It is one among the thick, strong ligaments that holds the sacroiliac (SI) joint, which forms where their own ilia meet the sacrum just below the spine on either side.

The ligaments around the SI joint facilitate pelvic stability and, since the pelvis is attached to the base of the central source, spinal stability. The lumbar spine is a kind of highly mobile segment that bends forward, backward and sideways and some rotating. The ligaments that attach to lumbar vertebrae are prone to injury if this vertebral segment is overexerted.

Causes

The iliolumbar joint can be injured in a variety of ways, including lifting a heavy object, impact from an autumn or repetitive rotation of your lower back.
